Jarrahdale’s Future is a sub-committee of the Jarrahdale Community Collective with the vision is ensure Jarrahdale grows to be a sustainable community for its residents and visitors.
JF is run by a small group of resourceful and passionate residents who are tackling big issues impacting Jarrahdale. When the group formed, they shared their research, local knowledge and brought some of our own skills to the table – retired Lawyer, retired Forester, Nurse and Psychologist. Of course all volunteers and all local residents with “skin in the game” so to speak.
If people have the information they can share which will help us, or fill some of our knowledge “holes” we promise to use it well and for the benefit of Jarrahdale.
We’d appreciate locals telling us their pressing issues too, so that we can gather more supporters around us, even seek some consensus and direct our efforts in these areas. We’re a diverse bunch without political ambition other than Jarrahdale’s Future.

Current Projects
Ground Water Extraction - Lot 13 & L14 Nettleton Road, Karrakup
This is a proposal by Karrakup Spring Water Pty Ltd (a subsidiary of BlackMount Investments which in turn is a subsidiary of Black Mount Holdings) to buy Lots 13 and 14 Nettleton Road,Karrakup WA 6122,(currently part of Cooralong Orchard). They intend to use the orchard groundwater pumps to extract 50 million litres a year to sell as bottled drinking water.
The proposal is to take this water by continuous pumping 24 hours a day and to truck it out24 hours a day in large B Double tankers to a processing plant using Nettleton Road and Jarrahdale Road to exit the area. They have not disclosed where this water from Cooralong Orchard will be sold, but in their operations in the eastern states it is either bottled and sold by them as Black Mount Spring Water, or sold to other companies to bottle and rebrand, or it is pumped into big bladders inside shipping containers and shipped to either Asia or the Middle East for bottling and sale there.

Jarrahdale's Water Supply
Concerns had been raised regarding the pipeline that supplies water to Jarrahdale. Our group had a look at the section of pipeline that runs into the townsite from the forest section behind Curo St. Quite a lot of damage/repair spots were noted and at the pipe junction that feeds the water supply tanks, it was corroded and weeping. We are concerned that the pipeline may not be robust enough to ensure the town has an adequate water supply in the event of a fire or other emergency. We have submitted an enquiry to Water Corp asking for further info on the pipeline and are currently awaiting a response. We are advised that enquiries will be responded to within 10 working days, if we have had no response by then we will contact Water Corp again.
Residents asked if we could enquire about their concerns regarding low water pressure and raise the fact that the water leaking from the pipeline causes environmental concern due to wastage of water. We will follow up with Water Corp in our next communication with them.

Tonkin Highway Extension to Albany Highway Through Jarrahdale
Mundijong Road and Jarrahdale Road are already designated as State Route 22, a transport corridor which extends from Rockingham to the Albany Highway. Connecting to the Albany Highway, and hence to the Great Southern Wheatbelt and the South Coast Region is central to the issue of traffic through Jarrahdale.
We have found that conversations about the southern extension of the Tonkin can lead to talk of further extension of the Tonkin south to Pinjarra sometime in the distant future. It’s an attempt to play down our concerns because apparently the Tonkin will eventually go on past us and there won’t be a problem for Jarrahdale. This argument then continues with assurances that the link to the Albany Highway will be made from about Keysbrook across to somewhere in the vicinity of North Bannister (Halfway House). It’s an attempt to kick the can down the road, and it’s a red herring.

Projects Completed
Jarrahdale Communications Tower – Completed
As a result of all the consultations, Jarrahdale’s Future had with interested parties it became clear that any backup power to the Tower had to be sustainable for at least 4 days. The Shire has now installed a diesel fuel generator with a 4-day fuel supply. All the service providers on the Tower are connected to this backup power and the generator turns on automatically if there is a power outage.
A successful Shire application was made through the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Mitigation Activity Funding for monies to undertake the necessary clearing of vegetation around the Tower. Consultations were held between the Shire and the local division of DBCAto agree on the fire mitigation plan. The DBCA also agreed to increase fire mitigation around the area. This work was completed by the end of last year. (See before and after photographs below.)This considerably decreases the likelihood of the Tower being damaged in a major fire event.
The aircraft warning light has been replaced. Monitoring this light has been a problem in the past. Telstra have agreed to install a monitoring device on the light that will send a signal to Telstra if the light fails. This signal will be forwarded to the CASA office at the Perth Airport and to the Shire, so the appropriate action can be taken. A Telstra team have visited the site and the Shire is currently awaiting confirmation that the monitoring device has been installed.
The Shire have also made the monitoring and upkeep of the Tower an item in the job description of the Coordinator Emergency Services. Corporate knowledge is easily lost when people move in and out of jobs very frequently, as seems to be normal these days. This should ensure that the Tower will not ‘fall off the agenda’ in future.
